Exercise 2: Work in Progress
Continue to work on your project, developing your interdisciplinary practice by acquiring skills and applying them to your ideas and research.
The depth of your research, the scope of the project’s development and its resolution should reflect a substantial effort of independent study, as expected of students at Stage 2 (HE5).
Being creative should be constructive, meaningful and engaging. The process should be one of inquisitive experimentation and purposeful activity to explore your creative voice and the potential it has to deliver meaning and significance, both for yourself and your audience.
Be ambitious and motivated by the possibilities of your practice – and enjoy the process!
Reflections of China
There is a city in China called Cixi, a suburb of the Ningbo megacity. This city is built across Shanghai, in Hangzhou Bay. The water element in the city is everywhere. Cixi is built by the sea, but several rivers run through the town, creating lovely canals. Wandering around the massive buildings, I was stunned by the beauty created by their reflection in the water. Gradually, discovering the water reflections had become a game for me. Eventually, I was waiting for dusk to pass to capture more pictures and learn how the water element can change my vision and perspective.
The pictures shown below seem magical to me. It feels like the earth, water, and sky have become one!

I found the moonlight to be my best assist in this task!

And then I discovered two amusement parks! I was stunned by the lights and architecture, but the water reflections pictures came out really special.

The second amusement park is in a stone throw away from the city. I loved the background of the impressive buildings giving a different perspective to the eye.

The wheel was changing colours constantly. Therefore, the reflection on the water came out amazing!

Because the colours where vivid I could see their shades changing on their reflection

Depending on the angle, the water image was becoming blurred.

I thoroughly enjoyed this project. It was a concept of adventure and discovery, as I was physically exploring the city I was staying in, not knowing what lay ahead. So, while wandering around, I kept being surprised and thrilled to find out what was in the next corner and if that new finding would help me more to show and tell.
I also discovered that the photo lens can show us things we can’t imagine or spot with the naked eye. So, the camera became a magnifying glass, a companion to unlock and capture images that are around us but we can’t see. I realised how important the angle, the time of the day, or even the state of the water is: to get the best mirroring reflection, the water must be completely calm. But even with waves and streams, the light becomes playful, and the outcome is always different.
Looking forward to seeing what is next to come.
