Exercise 1: Alternative Forms
This is a playful and experimental exercise that enables you to test and trial new ideas and forms. Take inspiration from the case study above and the way combining methods, such as photography, writing and film can generate a rich tapestry of ideas and connections that form something new. You may advance with your practice and want to continue in a particular trajectory, or you may want to try something completely new, either way, you are encouraged to seek alternative ways of working to push the boundaries of your practice.
Use the prompts below as starting points to generate ideas and create some outcomes in an imaginative and explorative way, reflecting on your practice’s relationship with the broader world? What form does this take? Are there any alternatives?
- How can you measure something without a ruler or a clock?
- What does a three-dimensional representation of something flat look like?
- Use smell, touch, taste, and breath creatively.
- What are your boundaries?
- Create a network.
Perhaps you have prompt ideas to generate alternative forms? As you develop your initial thoughts, look through the case study above and consider how text, images and research content are used to build ideas and connections between methods and disciplines. Can you incorporate any of these methods and approaches into this exercise? How can you broaden your practice and generate unexpected ideas?
Build on your initial ideas and expand on what alternative form means to you.
Document and review your outcomes in your learning log.

This famous quote shows our agony in searching for ourselves through perpetual research within; the meaning of Ithaca.

Reflecting on the material obtained regarding the Barnsley Interface, getting to the core, the idea is about the journey you decide to take and what you can obtain out of it.
A journey is, by any means, an esoteric expedition to spot anything that catches your interest in your surroundings process it and discover more about yourself. Therefore, even a short stroll can cause a great internal journey because there is an interaction between the outer and internal worlds. This perpetual friction between those two universes can generate countless connections and have fruitful outcomes;

Ithaca and its allegory show us that our vision should be embracing the signals and the external stimulations, having our minds always eager to import, process and export information.

the blurred blinding illuminations of the streets on your way can be perceived as ethereal lights, taking you on a magical journey; Time and space don’t matter.

It is this rare sensation that takes up your spirit and you lose yourself in your thoughts and memories.

Memories of Thessaloniki… My birthplace.
…Walking down Agia Sofia street towards the seaside, observing the people, the surroundings,

Mount Olympus as it pops out between the tall buildings resembling as it emerges from the sea on the sunset

Then walk on the decks of the seaside, being smitten by the gleaming coast and the White Tower where my Thessaloniki is shining under the moon.

the reflections on the water of the retired <<VELOS>> battleship (former USS Eldridge); giggling about the urban legend, that the <<Philadelphia experiment>> took place on that ship.
the glowing lights…

took my thought about other places, mythical and ethereal, about castles and fairy tales.
But the surroundings were way too interesting to ignore.

I couldn’t stop staring at the crescent moon on a pillar, of an old (Ottoman era) building.
MEMORY.

The natural lights of the dawn… How the sun is coming out to let the night go…Somewhere in Khalkidhiki, northern Greece.

Empty spaces; moving towards the sun-whose rays reflect on the water… walking barefoot, by myself, enjoying life… How can I remember, how can I forget?
REMEMBER ME…
English lyrics :
In the eyes, the star of dawn plays
the sun washes the dream of the earth
love is a wide and deep river
it’s tired and goes to sleep
For which trip have you set off?
Remember me and love me
the east is stealing a small kiss from you
a small, bitter kiss burns on the lips
which far trip is calling you
you’ll leave stranger, white are the sails
forgetfulness lurks
For which trip have you set off?
Remember me and love me
the east is stealing a small kiss from you.

Second thoughts about utopian places. The red light signifies danger and awareness as well as affection; passion for life where water is the key element for it.

Holy eternal water!

In search of eudemonia. The sun, the light, the water, the rock, the green of the forest. All of them aligned in perfection.
In my fantasy I see a clear world
where even at night is less darkness.

More thoughts about incomplete wishes and dreams; The more I observe and think, the clearer I see.

The voyage is about to realise that WE should be set up to open as many windows as possible on the unforeseen, to let the light come into our hearts to shine and help us discover more about who we are…
How can the mind find its peace on a bed sheet?
How can the Mediterranean sea be tied with ropes?
The perpetual journey of our minds and our souls in search of Ithaca is looking for an answer to these questions.

<<The secret of life>>
We stood next to the old man, on the banks of the river Acheron-Styx. We asked where you can find the secret of life, what you mean and see. - Life has no secrets for those who don't want them to exist. But for those who are still looking, it is a pure catastrophe! No matter how hard you look, you won't find And when you think you have discovered something, The ultimate goal, the one-of-a-kind, You realize that you know almost nothing... Alexander Papanikolaou
