ASSIGN-4

INT. FLAT-MORNING

A middle-aged man is sleeping topless. His room looks untidy and dirty. Lots of branded clothes are scattered around. A doctor’s attire is hanging behind the door. On his bedside table are a photo frame of a boy and a girl. Next to it, there is a handmade card << to the best Daddy in the world>>. Not much light in the room. Sunbeams break in from the window only to show the amount of dust that is in the air. His phone alarm is ringing.
Wakes up in agony, breathing heavily, not clearly understanding where he is exactly.
BILL
-For God’s sake!
He reaches under his bed. An empty bottle of GLEN KEITH whiskey is rolling under it.
-Where is the damn phone? I forgot to switch the alarm off!
The phone is still ringing. Bill stands up and finally finds it under a pile of clothes put in a way like he undressed and left them as they were. He switches the alarm off and jumps on the bed. He checks the time. It’s 6:30. He hears people singing under his flat. Stands up. Goes by the window. Sees a group of young people staggering as they walk down the road. Someone from another flat in his pyjamas is shouting at them as it’s too early to be so noisy and they are mocking him back.
-It seems like they are having a good time…
Goes into the bathroom. He looks at his face in the mirror. Grey hair, grey beard. He splashes his face with water.

-How did I end up like this?
Walks down the kitchen, silent. He puts the radio on. It plays rock music.
The kitchen is a mess. The sink is full of dirty cutlery, dishes and cups. There is a pile of pizza boxes on the kitchen table and food crumbs on the kitchen bar, on the floor, and everywhere. He makes coffee, opens a pizza box and takes the last piece. He eats quietly.

RADIO PRESENTER
Good morning everyone! I know most of you are still sleeping, but there are some restless souls thereabout who want some good music to boost their morals! Here we go! Brian Adams, Summer of 69! GOOD MORNING!
Bill stops and listens. He can’t help himself not to sing back: << I got my first real six-string, bought it at the five-and-dime, played till my fingers bled, it was the summer of 69>>…

EXT.PARK-NIGHT (FLASHBACK)

Young Bill is walking down a steep road with two friends, heading towards a massive circular gazebo. He looks reluctant to walk but it looks like his friends are dragging him along. They are laughing and singing. Many young people are pacing in the same direction.
MARK
Walks next to Bill leans over and talk with enthusiasm.
-How long is this gazebo staying this time?
BILL
-It’s the campus’s annual party so it’s going to be longer than normal. Probably for a week or so!
JASON
Jumps over them and shouts!
No Damn Biology, Chemistry and Laboratories for a week THEN! The party is on! And the DJ is playing the best music ever! Listen!
MARK
-Brian Adams!
Sings along.
-<< …Standing on your mama’s porch, you told me that you’d wait forever, Oh and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never, those were the best days of my life…>>
Then they sing all together
-<< Back in the Summer of 69 >>.
They enter the venue. Boys and girls holding drinks are dancing and singing.
MARK
-I’m going to get us some drinks.
BILL
-I don’t feel like drinking today, to be honest. I’m not in a mood.
JASON
-Come on man! We eat, we study we live altogether. We should get pissed together! That’s the way it should be!
BILL
-No, I insist! I don’t feel like it.
MARK
-Why are you always so stubborn? Why are you not following what your company says? Everybody wants to have a good time! Why are you ruing it?
BILL
-None can have control over me! I will have a drink when I want to! End of the story!
JASON
-Leave him! Please get a drink for the two of us. Period.
Mark heads to the bar shaking his head and muttering.
BILL
-I hate when people push me to do things! I can’t stand it!
JASON
-Relax mate! Is it about Anastasia again?
BILL
-You shouldn’t scratch that wound.
JASON
-She should be here tonight, you know it?
BILL
-I don’t care!
JASON
-Really? you were devastated last week when she left you!
BILL
-Jason, please, I don’t feel like talking about it anymore! Anastasia made her choice. It was me over her friends and we both know what she did!
JASON
-You are not fair Bill! your selfish ego doesn’t let you see it clearly! Anastasia did the right thing. I know it was your birthday and you had arranged something special for both of you but her friend needed her. She asked you to rearrange everything, but you disagreed!
BILL
-We are who we are and we are our choices…
JASON
-Listen, Man!
It’s me your friend Jason telling you tonight that if you don’t change your mindset you will not go far in life. You might become a successful doctor but you will end up alone. Pick up your damn phone and apologize to her!
Mark shows up holding drinks and singing, seeing Jason talking to Bill passionately who has his head low silently, processing what he says.
MARK
-Here are our drinks!
Life is beautiful!
JASON
-Life I beautiful!
Raising his glass up.
-CHEERS! Let’s drink on this special night!
BILL
-You are right, I’ll call her.
Picks up his mobile phone. Dials.
ANASTASIA
-Hello?
