Exercise 2: Reflection and Evaluation

Exercise 2: Reflection and Evaluation

Produce a Learning Log entry (maximum 750 words or a 6-minute oral presentation), reflecting on what you have learned during this course.

It will be helpful to reflect on the journey you have taken:

  • What have been the challenges you have faced or overcome?
  • What aspects do you feel you have most enjoyed, and where are your biggest achievements or the areas where you feel you made the most progress?
  • How did your critical essay develop your thinking?
  • Which elements of your self-directed project were the most challenging, successful or surprising?
  • Which elements of the project failed? Why was that? Did you leave those elements behind, or did you incorporate parts of the failure into your working methods to embrace the things you discovered?

Reflective Presentation/Evaluation

Embarking on this course has been a profoundly insightful journey, filled with both challenges and moments of significant progress. The creative process was not just about producing a final piece but also about understanding my artistic growth, refining my technical skills, and developing a stronger critical perspective. Through research, experimentation, and reflection, I have gained valuable insights that will shape my future artistic practice.

One of my biggest challenges during this project was organising my thoughts. Initially, I struggled with how to do this, which required me to step back and reassess my approach. Talking to my tutor helped me find new perspectives to resolve these difficulties. Another major hurdle was time management. Balancing physical research, practical work, and writing my thoughts was challenging, mainly when unexpected obstacles arose. However, I learned to manage my workload more effectively by setting structured deadlines and prioritising tasks.

Additionally, receiving and responding to feedback presented a challenge. At first, I found it difficult to detach myself emotionally from my work and view criticism objectively. However, as the project progressed, I realised that constructive feedback was essential for growth. Engaging with peers and mentors allowed me to see my work from different perspectives, ultimately strengthening my outcome.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this project was the freedom to explore and push creative boundaries. I appreciated the ability to experiment with different techniques and media, which allowed me to refine my artistic voice, for instance, combining photography and storytelling.

A significant achievement in this project was my ability to develop a more refined and intentional creative process. I embraced instinctive decision-making and consulted a thoughtful and research-driven approach. This balance between intuition and critical analysis helped me create a more cohesive and impactful final piece.

Additionally, I felt a sense of accomplishment in effectively conveying music into my stories. Seeing my ideas take shape visually and receiving positive feedback reinforced my confidence in my creative abilities.

Moreover, the lesson encouraged me to reflect on the practical aspects of art-making. I became more aware of how historical and cultural contexts influence artistic expression, and this understanding informed my creative choices. The writing process also helped refine my visual language, ensuring my work was conceptually strong.

The most challenging aspect of the project was to say something in a simple, unique voice. There were moments when I felt stuck, unsure of how to move forward. However, through continuous experimentation and reflection, I found solutions and progress.

The project’s most successful element was comparing the trip to China with the Odyssey. This part of my work felt the most resolved and aligned with my feelings. Seeing everything come together in the final stages was incredibly rewarding.

One of the most surprising aspects of this journey was how much my work evolved from the initial concept. I started with a specific idea, but my vision shifted as I experimented with different influences. Embracing this fluidity allowed me to create something more dynamic and layered than anticipated.

Not everything in the project went according to plan. One element that did not work as expected was another photographic/storytelling concept that started with enthusiasm from my side but did not go through as it should because I lost my sense of it. Initially, I was frustrated by these setbacks, but upon reflection, I realised these failures were valuable learning experiences.

Instead of discarding these failed attempts entirely, I found ways to integrate aspects of them into my final piece. For example, I worked on the Urban Jungle and the Mid Autumn Festival story until the last minute. This experience reinforced the notion that failure is an essential part of the creative process and that being adaptable leads to more substantial artistic outcomes.

This course has been a pivotal moment in my artistic development. I have gained a deeper understanding of my creative process, refined my technical and conceptual skills, and learned to embrace challenges and failures as opportunities for growth. The experience has also reinforced the importance of research, critical reflection, and feedback in producing meaningful work.

I plan to continue exploring my surroundings to obtain more insights. I am also considering documenting my creative process more systematically, allowing me to track my progress and refine my approach to future projects.

Overall, this project has been an invaluable learning experience, and I feel more confident in navigating the complexities of artistic practice. I am excited to apply these lessons to future endeavours and continue pushing my creativity’s boundaries.
