EXERCISE 1-page 95

Designing images

Exercise 1: Identifying visual communications
Using the list above, identify two or three different examples of each type of
communication. Try and find examples using different types of media (print,
web, moving image, etc.). Remember that you can access image libraries such as Bridgeman
Education through the OCA student website. Annotate your chosen images and store them in
your learning log.
In what ways do these images make reference to broader ideas of visual culture? Make some
notes.

Alternative message

Person standing over Stop Racism word cloud. Concept of stopping discrimination against blacks or people of color because all lives matter.
International women’s day. 8th march. Horizontal poster with three female faces. Break The Bias campaign. Vector illustration in flat style for greeting card, postcard, web, banner.
Black History Month. African American History. Celebrated annual. In February in United States and Canada. In October in Great Britain. Poster, card, banner, background. Vector illustration

A picture is worth of a thousand words. Visual communication artists know this aspect better than anybody else.

Going on line looking for images I could upload onto my learning log/blog, I realised how strong, manipulating, provocative visual communication images can be.

They are everywhere but they are subtle.

The louder the message the more insignificant product.

We are everyday bombarded with messages of various context, concise, importance and credibility.

Using a set of various techniques aiming for our subconscious visual communications in the form of advertisements, are aiming to becoming a second nature to us so when we are buying an advertised product we obey to what we were programmed to do: consume.
